North Wales is famous for it's Slate, at it's peak in 1898 it employed 17,000 men and produced 485,000 tons of slate. Many of those large quarries such as Dinorwig have long since closed and are now popular for their appearances on TikTok & Instagram, part of the huge Penrhyn works now boasts the worlds fastest zipline, I often wonder if those quarry workers that endured such terrible working conditions ever imagined that the places they worked would be a tourist attraction. Many smaller quarries are still in operation and produce the highest quality slate that we use for our signs, We are very proud to work with Welsh Slate.
Slate is a grey/blue/green metamorphic rock that is formed from layers of shale. It is a sedimentary rock that is deposited on the bed of streams and rivers, originally formed as deep-water mudstones on an ancient sea-floor around 500 million years ago. These rocks were later uplifted, folded and metamorphosed to form slate about 400 million years ago. Welsh slate differs a lot from other slate due to its old age. Welsh slate is much denser than any imported slate and it can be said that Welsh slate is tougher and more durable and is considered the best in the world.
